Bought a T1i to document the birth of my firstborn years ago. I always wondered about this and can now see that Roger's testimony shows what I thought to be true. I do think that what Roger says raises the question of the lifespan of all MILC cameras, which use the sensor in a video-like way over longer durations for the electronic viewfinder and for IBIS. Here's the link to Roger's post on another forum: And the electronics are more expensive to replace than a shutter or mirror box! Video-usage seems to be extremely hard on the electronics of a camera that is designed primarily for stills or for occasional short video clips-like virtually all DSLRs and MILCs. However, as stated before, the wear will target more specifically the mount, the memory card slot, cosmetic (rig and cages.). so i don't think that using the camera specifically for video will damage it. When looking at used cameras like 5D2 or 5D3 I'm aware that shuttercount is an important factor but what if if the camera has been used for video and only video? Does anything wear out or anything to be concerned about?īased on my moderate understanding, the sensor and all of its components are cooked at very high temperatures during the manufacturing process.

It may be interesting to see how they address heat when the camera is finally released. Perhaps it had video features whose extensive use was damaging to the camera because of heat or, perhaps it had heat problems from causes other than video that they found to be more damaging than thy thought. Sony's replacement for the A6000 was widely rumored/reported to be due to heat problems with the replacement camera. Since the electronic viewfinder in a MILC is reading off the sensor, that also involves video-like and possibly damaging durations of use, beyond IBIS cameras.Ģ.

Worth reading by anyone who buys used camera bodies or who does video with still camera.ġ. Roger's experience at LensRental with cameras used for video is fairly dramatic and certainly a major caution.
SHUTTERCOUNT VS SHUTTERCHECK FULL
How well are mirrorless cameras with IBIS, heat sinked? They also tend to run hot sampling off the sensor full time. According to Roger Cicala of LensRentals in his posts starting here.
